Global Entrepreneurship Monitor

The Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) http://www.gemconsortium.org/ is an international research consortium that investigates early stage entrepreneurship activity. Since 2002, when The Chinese University of Hong Kong joined the GEM Consortium, we have held forums and published reports describing Hong Kong's entrepreneurship and the conditions that affect entrepreneurial activity. In 2003, the Shenzhen Academy of Social Sciences members joined our research team. The 2004 GEM study has been completed on Hong Kong & Shenzhen. A press conference and a forum was held to report on the findings to the public. A comparison of the two cities is likely to bring us new insight on entrepreneurship. The 2004 GEM study  also investigated the corporate entrepreneurship of established firms in Hong Kong.

In 2005, we used the previous data to join a research consortium led by Prof. Erkko Autio (now with Imperial College) to study high-growth entrepreneurship in Hong Kong. He was invited as the keynote speaker at the "Innovation Policy and High Growth Startups" forum on May, 2006. A fourth GEM report was published on this subject together with Prof. Erik Baark (now the Dean of Division of Social Science, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology).

After taking a rest of two years, the Centre for Entrepreneurship participated in the GEM consortium again in 2007. It revealed a delightful  and surprising finding that nascent entrepreneurship in Hong Kong almost topped all the developed economy, probably due to the economic boom in China and Hong Kong. A fifth GEM report was published with graceful support from Hong Kong Business Intermediary.  The most recent study undertaken was in 2009. The Shenzhen Academy of Social Sciences re-join the Centre again and provided generous support to cover both Hong Kong and Shenzhen.  The fifth GEM report is being published in 2010.  The GEM reports and other related published are available for download.
