Mr. WONG S.K. Anthony, S.B.S.

Mr. Anthony S K Wong is currently appointed as the President, China and South East Asia, by the non-profit organization One Laptop Per Child (OLPC), helping the organization to launch its activities in Asia. OLPC is a worldwide project to help to bring education to children in the poorest parts of the world by providing them with a rugged, low cost, low power consumption laptop computer equipped with many education software for self learning and exploration. Mr. Wong founded the non-profit organization OLPC Asia Pacific in Hong Kong in November 2008 and raised funds to donate laptops to the school children in the earthquake stricken Sichuan and recently village schools in Bhutan. Mr. Wong has retired from the Hong Kong Government at the end of 2007, having work in it for most parts of his career. During the past 5 years before retirement he was the Commissioner for Innovation and Technology, responsible for the promotion and development of innovation and technology in Hong Kong. Major initiatives include supporting applied research and development and technology transfer, facilitating the provision of technology support infrastructure and development of human resources, fostering technological entrepreneurship and an innovation and technology culture in the community, furthering technological collaboration with the Mainland and other places, as well as promoting internationally accepted standards and conformity assessment services to underpin technological development and international trade. Prior to this, Mr. Wong worked in different areas in the Office of the Telecommunications Authority. He was appointed the Director-General of Telecommunications and the Telecommunications Authority of Hong Kong from March 1997 to August 2003. One of his major achievements was the liberalization of the telecom services and facilities markets in Hong Kong. Mr. Wong also contributed towards the development and promotion of the information infrastructure in Hong Kong and the convergence of the computing, broadcasting and telecommunications industries. In the international arena, Mr. Wong has participated actively in the International Telecommunication Union. He was the chairman of the World Telecommunication Policy Forum in 2000, Chairman of the Annual Global Symposium for Regulators in 2000 and Chairman of the Policy and Legal Committee of the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference held in 2002. Mr. Wong holds a Bachelor of Science Honours degree in Engineering, a Master of Philosophy degree and a Master of Social Sciences degree.
